Energy Smart Communities Policy
In 2002, Landcom commissioned a consortium of consultants (Mark Ellis and Associates, Solarch and Hill PDA) to conduct a research project called "Energy Smart Urban Solutions".
Landcom's aim is to make its development more sustainable by reducing their associated greenhouse gas emissions.
The objectives of the research were to enable Landcom to make informed decisions through better understanding of the opportunities, constraints, costs and benefits associated with energy smart design, renewable energy and energy efficient products.
The Energy Smart Urban Solutions research project included two detailed hypothetical case studies of real Landcom sites, Edmondson Park and Prince Henry Redevelopment site.
Following the outcomes of this research project, Landcom developed its Energy Smart Communities Policy in late 2002 well ahead of the implementation of BASIX targets in June 2004.
The Energy Smart Communities Policy commits Landcom to reducing greenhouse gas emissions from its "built form" product by 40%. Landcom is also committed to providing renewable or sustainable energy supply on its major developments.
We have now adopted the same targets as BASIX for energy efficiency of new buildings. In addition to BASIX targets, we require solar water heating on dwellings built by our developer and builder partners. For more details about energy related targets see our Sustainability Objectives and Targets.
