Wagga Wagga City Council will host a one day seminar for design and development professionals working in the Riverina catchment area.
Fourteen councils have been invited to participate in the event, which will be hosted at Wagga Wagga Country Comfort with over 100 people expected to attend. The seminar aims to expand the development industry’s thinking about effective urban design to create more sustainable neighbourhoods.
Landcom, the New South Wales government’s property arm, will lead the discussions with several of its consultants that are working on numerous urban planning and design projects across New South Wales. The presentations will focus on seven design guidelines that were released by Landcom in 2008 and an additional two (residential density and housing diversity) which were launched earlier this year.
Steve Driscoll, Director of Sustainability for Landcom said, “The development industry has embraced the practical advice included in the guidelines that are being used across Australia by the private and public sectors. Landcom has hosted several seminars across New South Wales to discuss the content in the guidelines. We have received encouraging and positive feedback from people that have participated in these events.”
“One of our key roles is to help further educate the development fraternity about effective urban design. The practical discussions at the seminar will highlight how great places are made, how to put the pieces of the jigsaw together in the right way and at the right time.”
“Wagga Wagga is a booming area that is facing the pressures and challenges associated with growing communities. The presentations will greatly assist this area in its planning phase, to create more sustainable communities in this region,” he added.
The 2008 guidelines include street design, street and tree design, public art, community facilities, open space, universal housing and built form.
Colby Farmer, Manager Development Services from Wagga Wagga City Council said, “Landcom has gained a reputation as being at the forefront of cutting edge urban design in New South Wales. Council expects the presentations from Landcom and its consultants to deliver invaluable practical urban design advice to people working in the development industry in this region.”
Additional speakers at the seminar include Anna Petersen, Landcom Social Sustainability Manager; Tanya Vincent, Architect and Urban Designer; Ingrid Mather, Landscape Architect, JMD Design; Crosbie Lorimer, Landscape Architect, Clouston Associates; Marla Guppy, Cultural Planner, Guppy and Associates; Anne Sutherland, Architect and Urban Designer, Architectus; Tony McBurney, Architect and Access Specialist, Integrated Design Group and Steve Rossiter, Social Planner, Elton Consulting.
